being able to travel throughout Western Australia to photograph many families in some of the most beautiful locations so I found myself documenting the landscape, flora, fauna, and animals I have the privilege to see. My son was born with and later diagnosed at 18 months old with a rare disease called
Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis.
His diagnoses was of multi-system LCH, meaning it was in his skin, blood and bone
- including a lesion/hole in his jaw.
He spent years in and out of hospital receiving
chemotherapy, steroids, biopsy's, infusa-port surgery, MRI's, CT scans,
PET scan, ultrasounds, full skeletal survey's, water deprivation tests,
lymph node removal and had many procedures through out his young life.
He had a recurrence of LCH around 4 years old, this time the LCH damaged his pituitary stalk
which left him with another rare disorder called Diabetes Insipidus.
During these difficult years, it reminded me just how many moments I wanted to cherish
He was my inspiration to pick the camera up.
My son is now 13 years old, healthy and happy.
He has his own Endocrinologist and manages
his Diabetes Insipidus with medication-
something he will live with for the rest of his life
and he has annual appointments with Oncology .
Words really can not convey just how traumatising it is for a child to go through such a life altering illness and the affects it leaves on the whole family. We feel so blessed and all the happy feelings rolled into one to have him here. He's a fighter!. He has taught me to appreciate the small things in life.
I am so proud of my boy, times infinity.
